Anyone who wishes to work as a paid cycle instructor. Our certified course comprehensively covers the theory and practice of teaching children and adults to ride safely on road, to the official standards set by the Department for Transport and within the framework set by The Bikeability Trust, the industry's professional body, and 1st4Sport, who are the awarding body.
What are the course requirements?
This 4-day course has been developed by The Bikeability Trust and 1st4Sport to equip you with the skills and knowledge to deliver Bikeability cycle training to children and adults. To deliver instruction at this level, the course requirements are:
Be over 18 years of age
Be able to produce proof of ID
Be able to communicate effectively in English (this includes listening, speaking, reading and writing)
Be able to cycle competently, confidently and consistently to Bikeability level 3 standard.
The course covers essential issues such as risk assessment, insurance, child protection, teaching techniques and client care. The course is taught as a mixture of classroom based theory and on the bike practical experience and includes some multiple choice testing as well as continuous tutor assessment.
On successful completion of the 4-days, you will be able to deliver Bikeability training as you work to becoming fully qualified.
After the course there are further development activities to complete via your e-portfolio. After gaining delivery experience you will undertake a Post Course Assessment (PCA) where you are observed teaching in the field, once completed to the required standard you will receive your certification. Most instructors gain full qualification in around six months. You cannot begin to deliver Bikeability training until you have both completed the 4-day course and all the elements for the e-portfolio, this gives you Provisional Instructor status.
The 4-day course costs £695 per person, this includes your one-off registration fee with 1st4Sport, pre and post course tutor support, one PCA visit and final certification. Assessor travel costs for the PCA visit are not included. Bookings are subject to our standard Terms & Conditions.
