Swindon Holiday Courses

We run Bikeability courses every school holiday (except Christmas) that teach small groups of riders to the Bikeability core levels 1, 2 and 3.

Please read the options below to decide which course is suitable for your child:

Learn to Ride

For children of any age who are unable to cycle. In particular, children who, for whatever reason, are struggling to master the skill. The course is two hours long and delivered over two sessions. All learning is off-road, taught in small groups, in a pressure-free environment.

Cost: Free of charge.

Level 1

For children in year groups 3 and 4 who are able to ride without stabilisers. The course is two hours long, delivered in one session. All learning is off-road and riders will learn the basic fundamentals for fun, safe cycle journeys. Max group size 12.

Level 2

For children in year groups 5, 6 and 7 who are confident riders, able to cycle one-handed and look over their shoulder. The course is six hours long, delivered over two sessions. Your child will learn to ride safely and responsibly; share the road with others and manage risk when cycling. Sessions will take place on quiet roads with a maximum group size of six.

Cost: Free of charge.

Level 2/3

For children in year groups 7 and above, who have completed Level 2 or are experienced riders. The course is five hours long, delivered over two sessions. It will take place on-road. Riders will recap and strengthen their Level 2 skills before moving on to Level 3. Max. group size is three.

Thanks to funding from Swindon Borough Council, all courses are FREE OF CHARGE for children who live in Swindon.  We do however require a refundable deposit of £10 per child to secure your place(s).  This will be refunded directly to you once your child has attended the training.

What to bring

Your child will need to bring a roadworthy bike to use. UK law does not require you to wear a helmet. If you do, please make sure your child's helmet fits correctly. Please note that due to COVID-19 instructors are not allowed to adjust helmets. We will be riding even if it's raining, so please make sure they bring weather appropriate clothing, a drink and snack.

Safety during COVID-19

The Bikeability Trust (our professional body) have been working with the Department for Education to lay out strict safe systems of work to enable training to take place. Our updated delivery guide and risk assessments provide for smaller group sizes to allow adequate distancing and all training will take place outside. Instructors and riders will maintain 2 metres social distancing at all times. Hand sanitizer will be available.

Your child must be well and not suffering from any COVID-19 symptoms or living with anyone who is symptomatic.  By booking training, parents are confirming that their child can understand and abide by social distancing rules and will follow the instructions of the course leaders; we reserve the right to terminate a session/course early if the course leaders feel it is in any way unsafe to continue.
