Meet the Team - Jacqui Wilcox

Jacqui Wilcox is our Cycle Training Manager, she is also a cycle instructor and leads rides for our Bike Minded project.

How are you connected to Life Cycle?

I am Life Cycle UK's Training Manager, and I support the instructors to deliver the cycle training. I am also an instructor myself and teach adults, children and new instructors. I lead rides for our Bike Minded project that supports people with mental health issues.

What's your earliest cycling memory?

I have seen a picture of myself on a trike in the back garden of my parents house in the 60's! I can also remember parents buying me a fantastic blue and yellow Raleigh bike from a shop in Hotwells by the Cumberland Basin. Anybody remember this shop? Sadly no longer there! I can remember being very excited.

What was your first bike?

A red trike.

What would your dream bike be?

A time machine that could transport me anywhere, and period in time quickly! That would be amazing! I would love to experience riding on one of those very early bikes in a long frock that helped towards the emancipation of women. Can anybody lend me a long frock?

What are your favourite cycling routes in Bristol/UK?

Bristol - The Festival Way, Pill path, Frome Valley Greenway and the Concorde Way. It is amazing how quickly you can cycle across Bristol on these routes.

UK - The Devon Coast to Coast Path. Ilfracombe to Plymouth is stunning.

How long does it take you to fix a puncture?

Mmmmm! That varies! I don't get many.

If you could wave a magic wand, and make something better about cycling, what would it be?

Cyclists and drivers rubbing along nicely and a better understanding of their issues, rather than an aggressive approach on occasions, 'them and us'. Just look at some of the rants on Facebook/YouTube, very unpleasant. I tend to find on the whole that Bristol drivers are very respectful. Cycling infrastructure that is helpful and doesn't end abruptly or put cyclists in a vulnerable position, and an unlimited pot of money for cycle training!

Who would your ideal tandem partner be?

Dervla Murphy. I am currently reading her book 'Wheels within Wheels' I think she would be a fascinating companion.

What's your favourite pre/post cycling food?

Flapjack and a peanut butter sandwich.

What's your best cycling related joke?

Nah! Rubbish at jokes, I can never remember the punch line!
