Who is it for?
What will I learn?
The number of cyclists is increasing exponentially each year - and with large-scale Government investment in walking and cycling, this trend is set to continue. To help driving instructors stay up-to-date with changing road conditions, the Department for Transport has partnered with the Bikeability Trust and key Driving Instructor Organisations to offer cycle awareness training to Approved Driving Instructors. You’ll receive bespoke training to ensure cyclists’ safety is at the forefront of your mind when teaching new drivers, using the following methods:
- Online training materials, with a variety of quizzes, videos and CGI clips.
- A 3.5-hour practical cycling course, which includes first-hand experience of cycling in traffic, supported by our qualified Cycling Instructors.
The course is based on the Highway Code and the National Standard for Cycle Training alongside other road-use national standards. You’ll complete the course able to set yourself apart from your competitors as a ‘Cycling Aware Driving Instructor’. The courses are currently in the pilot phase and therefore they are not mandatory, however, this may change in future.
“A great course to add knowledge and first-hand experience to the ADI’s teaching toolkit.”
“As an ADI, I have been able to put into practice the project's experience within my work and with my delivery of road safety in the community.”
“I learned far more than I thought I would and had a fun-packed day!”
