City & Guilds - Level 1 courses

Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, we have suspended our training courses for the time being. However, we are working hard to adapt our ways of working – and our workshop layout – to make it safe for people to learn under the Government guidelines. We hope to be announcing upcoming course dates soon. In the meantime, if you would like to express an interest in taking a Level 1 course, please scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the link to fill out the form.

What does it cover?

Our two-day, intensive bike mechanics course builds confidence and fundamental understanding in four key areas:

  • Rim brake removal/re-fitting and adjusting
  • Derailleur gear system removal/re-fitting and tuning
  • Puncture repair from start to finish
  • Comprehensive safety checking

This is an accredited course: Each unit will be assessed as we cover it. On successful completion of all assessments you will achieve a City & Guilds Level 1 Certificate in Cycle Mechanics (3902-18).

"The tutor was very good and patient. I feel as though I achieved a great deal and know more about bikes than I ever did." - Sustrans employee

Who is it for?

Home mechanics, cycle instructors, teachers, youth leaders - anyone who wants an accredited introduction to cycle mechanics.

We teach in small class sizes (maximum of 6). The course is very hands-on: Our first-class tutors demonstrate textbook techniques, then there is plenty of time to practice and hone your skills. You will need a basic knowledge of bikes and bike tools.  We can support you with basic reading and writing skills.

What should you bring?

Courses are taught in our professional bike workshop in Bristol. We supply overalls, gloves, work stands, comprehensive teaching notes and all tools.

We provide dedicated "teaching bikes" to ensure a consistent learning experience - leaving you free to practice your skills on your own bike when you get home.
