Over 55s Autumn roundup, 2017

What a wonderful season of cycling it’s been for our Silver Cyclists project - our programme of gentle, group rides that go out into nature to help people aged 55+ stay fit, healthy and socially vibrant. Here are some of the things they got up to over the last few months:

‘Art and the Public Realm’ ride

In early September the Over 55s embarked on a joint ride with the Bike Minded group. They took a gently paced tour of Bristol looking at artworks and architectural installations featured on the Art and the Public Realm website. The four works they visited are by international artists and specialist architects:

“The over 55 rides are just a lovely way of seeing Bristol at a slower pace, so you can really take in your surroundings and live in the moment; also discovering new places is a joy” - Irena

Cross Link and Brean Down adventure

This new ride for the Over 55s group makes use of the recently opened traffic-free cycle path from Weston Super Mare Station to the limestone ridge of Brean Down, eight miles away. This was an exhilarating ride due to the windy weather! The group stopped for lunch at the National Trust Cove Cafe at the base of Brean Down. They enjoyed fantastic views of the wild sea and Brean Down from the upstairs windows.

"The ride to Brean was excellent and the National Trust cafe did us well.  A few of us climbed the steps up onto Brean Down where the views were fantastic!  It's a great new route, making Brean Down so much easier to reach" - Leroy

Silver Cyclists’ Bike Buddy project

Over the summer, three volunteer ‘Cycle Buddies’ from different areas of Bristol helped us to support more people to get out and about on their bikes.  Working one-to-one or in very small groups, the Buddies help local people in their neighbourhood to discover cycle paths and bike-friendly routes on their doorstep and beyond....

"The Cycling Buddy scheme gave me confidence to get going. I now ride my bike to visit family and friends, go on bike rides alone and in groups, and just enjoy seeing Bristol from a different perspective. I feel fitter and have an increased sense of wellbeing, it's been very empowering all round, and it's been great meeting new people as well" - Julia
