Life Cycle's Inclusive Cycling Volunteers Shortlisted for Bristol Green Awards

Life Cycle's Inclusive Cycling volunteers have been shortlisted for one of this year's Bristol Green Volunteers Awards in the category of Sustainable Transport.

The awards celebrate the amazing contribution of volunteers to Bristol's status as a European Green Capital, supporting Bristol's green spaces, sustainability and/or wildlife.

The Awards committee was keen to recognise the vital support given by over 80 volunteers to Life Cycle's innovative Two's Company, Bike Minded and Over 55s projects; which engage people who are blind or visually impaired, those experiencing issues with mental health and specific support for the Over 55s to take-up the healthy activity of cycling.

All our group rides are supported by volunteers, our Bike Minded and Over 55s group rides simply would not be able to go ahead without the help of a fantastic team of volunteers, who play a vital role in making them supportive and fun. Our Two’s Company project enabled 96 volunteer front riders and back riders to spend 1944 hours enjoying the countryside on a tandem this year. The time, energy and enthusiasm our volunteer front riders put in is regularly noted by out back riders: “The front riders are all such lovely people, supportive and friendly...It was an extraordinary experience, exhilarating and one of the best things I have ever done. I had a superb time. It was fantastic how people looked after each other and my front rider was amazing.”

Celia Davis, Community Active Travel Officer at Bristol City Council, who nominated Life Cycle's volunteers, said: "Bristol’s transport system poses many challenges in terms of sustainability, and the city’s endeavours to create a sustainable transport network are futile if some members of the community are excluded. The work that Life Cycle does to enable the whole community of Bristol to participate in the growing culture of cycling is inspiring, and essential for the development of an inclusive Green Capital."

The Awards ceremony takes place on Wednesday 12th November, from 6.30pm at the Paintworks, Bristol. Good luck to all the nominees.
