As a small charity, raising funds to support our life-changing work is an ongoing challenge. We are so grateful to the charitable trusts and foundations whose grants literally keep our projects running. But when an individual goes out of their way to support us, it really touches our hearts.
Over the coming months we will be celebrating the people who have gone that extra mile to show us they really believe in the work we do. First up:
Kirsty and Marcus - LVIS Audax organisers
Each year the Las Vegas Institute of Sport (LVIS) organises four long distance cycling events that take riders along picturesque lanes in the West Country. Some of the proceeds from the rides (along with donations collected on the day) are given to charity.
Marcus approached us to say we were one of the chosen charities for their 300km ‘Jaeger Bomb’ ride. He wanted to support our ‘Two’s Company’ project, which is close to his heart because he has been volunteering for the programme for the past 18 months. Marcus is one of our ‘front riders’ – a team of volunteers that pilot tandem bicycles, enabling blind and disabled adults and children to experience the joys and freedoms of cycling:
"We have been organising long distance cycle events for 10 years now and as I have been involved with the Two's Company project and enjoyed being a front rider, raising funds for Life Cycle seemed like a great choice! We are also tandem riders ourselves, so we thought it was particularly appropriate. We hope our contribution will help more people to enjoy the simple pleasure of cycling which many of us take for granted” – Marcus.
After a successful event, we were delighted to receive a donation of £360.42 – every penny of which will go towards enabling people like Jenny (who cannot cycle independently) to experience fun, freedom and friendship on two wheels.
“A near fatal car crash left me blind and with breathing problems. A friend recommended Two’s Company. I went along rather scared and worried about my fitness levels. On completing the ride I was so relaxed! Not only has the cycling improved my wellbeing and health it has boosted my social life and ability to mix with sighted people” – Jenny, visually impaired back rider
On behalf of everyone at Life Cycle – and the people we help – we want to say a huge thank you to Marcus, Kirsty and the LVIS Audax riders who raised money for us. It means a great deal to us.
