Bike maintenance for beginners
Who is it for?
Those new to cycling who want to keep their bikes in good shape and gain confidence in making basic adjustments and fixes. The workshop is also suitable for more experienced cyclists who have no previous experience of bicycle maintenance
The course is more about keeping a bike ‘healthy’ rather than treating it when it is ‘sick’! If you want something more advanced than this, try our BMW (bike maintenance workshop). What does it cover?
- Fitting and sizing, ergonomics.
- Cleaning & oiling routines.
- Basic M-shape check (M-shape check is a routine for checking the condition of your bike).
- Fixing punctures.
- Basic brake adjustments – only with multi-tool and hands! Changing blocks and cables is not covered.
- How gears work + correct use of gears (cycling skills) .
- Basic gear adjustments – barrel adjusters + understanding what limit screws do – no adjustments to limit screws and solving common gear problems such as erratic shifting and chain coming off.
- Information on general cycling matters, safety, bike upgrades, etc.
What tools are available?
A multi-tool is the only tool used. The course is designed to be mobile (ie can be run anywhere), and no parts are provided.
What do you get?
5 hours training, but also a free multi-tool.
CostJust £15 for Bristol residents. £40 to non-Bristol residents.

The Small Print
When you purchase on-line, you will receive an emailed confirmation that a payment has been taken. You will then receive joining instructions a few days prior to the start of the course by email. It is important, therefore, that you supply us with a correct email address.
If you need to cancel your place on a course, we ask you to give us as much notice as possible - to allow us to find a replacement. We do not refund cancellations with less notice than this.
Our courses need a certain take-up for it to be financially viable for us to run them. While this is almost universally the case, occasionally it does not happen. In this situation, we cancel the course.
If we make a decision to cancel, we do so a few days prior to the start date of the course. We will then notify you by email, and offer you a place on an alternative date, or give you a refund.
Please note - the subsidised price for courses (ie £15 is for Bristol-residents ie council tax payers to Bristol City Council. If you do not live in the Bristol-local authority area, you are not eligible for this subsidy. You should then purchase a place at the full price of £40. You can do this by purchasing a 'Know your bike (outside Bristol) voucher'.
If in doubt, ring us on 0117 353 4580
